lend me your hand, dear friend

for my feet may fail and falter

and I shall my stout staff tend

and hold you up for our trail’s course may alter

lend me, o companion, your silver voice

to take away my thoughts of darkness

and you shall have my best choice

of lines to read for comfort in life’s starkness

and take from me my soul’s love

my own, for it is my greatest gift

it shall warm your heart as a hearthstove

for it was warmed in me by the sunshine

when you, above clouds of sadness, my spirit did lift
